Fridays: weekend garden projects

So we finally decided to forget about a vegetable garden this year, so most of our sprouts are now in containers. Will be easier to maintain them until next spring when we clean up the vegetable garden area.

Meanwhile that first flower bed we started is looking better by the day as things are really starting to grow.

I may have said it in an earlier post, so forgive me if I am repeating myself. As there was so much grass and weeds growing in the beds, we not only added preen but also fully covered the bed with about 8 layers of newspaper prior to adding the mulch to help preventing new grass from growing. It has indeed helped a lot. We still have to go in there from time to time and remove some, but nothing compared to before.

I learned another thing. A dear friend told me that it is impossible to kill Yuccas and she was right. We had not killed any, but moved them around and thought we had removed all of its roots... Well, NOT! the Yuccas are growing beautifully but meanwhile suddenly I started noticing sprouts growing all over and in places I did not want them. So after MUCH search the net I realized that they are just about impossible to get rid of. I am trying one technique (where I suspect there to be still some roots) to see if it works. And that is rock salt. Will keep you all posted, but if ANYONE out there was successful please let me know. They ARE beautiful though and the flowers than come from there are simply gorgeous.

Here are other flowers that are blooming right now!
