Fridays: weekend garden projects

Well this past week we barely did much apart from my teen and hr friend Miss Smiley helping out weeding some beds. Last weekend with the party nothing happened either. We are finally though 100% done with one flower bed. So after taking everything out, dealing with weeds and grass growing, cleaning up the dirt as much as we could, wetting the ground, adding Preen and layers of newspapers to help prevent grass and weeds to grow, we have a new bed with a Japanese maple tree, one fire chief shrub, two moonshadow shrubs, two types of Yuccas, one white bleeding heart and a pink one, two rose bushes, some Phlox, day lilies, magic lilies, black eye Susans, hostas, sedum's, grape hyacinths and siberian irises. We also cleaned a path around the bed and added gravel. The end result is absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to see how everything will grow back next year.

We already started digging the adjacent bed, but still have a ways to go. My teen started digging and dividing the bulbs, so that we know what is what, once we replant it all. It certainly is lot of work but will be so worthwhile at the end of the day.

The vegetable plants are doing fine, even though still in planters, but will be transplanting them this weekend into large containers as there is no way we will get to the vegetable garden this year. So this coming weekend our plans are to host a birthday party for my teen's friend "part" daughter dancer, a fun walk on Sunday at the downtown Milwaukee's Arts Fest and work in the one flower bed that is partly "destroyed" and moving the vegetables.
