Last night while I was on Facebook I noticed a posting of an ex-colleague of mine. It was about an article on Wall Street Journal. He is of Asian descent and this article talks about the differences of parenting between Chinese Mothers and Western ones. The article is fascinating and I found myself agreeing with quite a bit of the writers comments in terms of parenting. Perhaps I find myself in the middle of both these cultures.
My relation with my kids is a warm one but I always expect them to excel in all they do. I believe hard work and determination is the key to success and self- esteem. I use that same technique with food and making my girls eat what is on the table. I am not about to make something different just because they do not like it or prepare some special food if we are entertaining and I know some of the kids coming may be fussy with food. Everyone at our house eats what I cook. That does not mean they will like it all, but at least it makes me happy to see they tried it and I may have made a small difference in broadening their taste buds.
